If you don’t have a 20 LB to 1 LB adapter hose to run your camp stove off of in emergencies, then the next best thing is to have a good supply of 1LB propane bottles. To buy propane in one pound green bottles on a regular basis is not the ideal way to buy propane, and of course stores and landfills treat them as one time use.

So if you have some one pound bottles, as you empty them hold on to them, or better yet, go to your local landfill and ask if you can have some. Tell them they are for garden decorations or something like that, do not mention refilling. Then get a refill adapter and have your 20 lb tank filled then refill your own green tanks. Much much cheaper.

Once you have a stockpile of empty bottles put them in the freezer for a couple of hours, then take one out at a time. Attach the refill adapter to your 20 lb tank upside down and use a digital scale to weigh the empty and full green tanks so you don’t over fill them. If you do over fill it a bit, take a small nail or screw driver and push in the pressure release pin at the top until the weight is right. This propane refill adapter has worked great for me, and allows me to lend out 1 lb tanks to family members without giving away a lot. I just make sure they bring back the empties or bring one with them.
